The British Society for Sexual Medicine (BSSM) was founded in 1997 (as the British Society for Sexual Impotence Research) for the purpose of promoting research and the exchange of knowledge about impotence and other aspects of sexual function and dysfunction, in both men and women throughout the UK scientific community.
The principal orientation of BSSM is toward the basic science of sexual function and dysfunction, and the clinical aspects of diagnosis and treatment of sexual problems in both men and women.
The society recognises the importance of a holistic approach to an understanding of human sexuality and its problems and encourages research into all of its many aspects.
The BSSM is based at University College London, 48 Riding House Street, London W1W 7EY.
The European Society for Sexual Medicine (ESSM)
The European Society for Sexual Medicine (ESSM) is a not-for-profit, multidisciplinary, academic and scientific organisation, dedicated to male and female sexual function and dysfunction. The main purposes of the ESSM are to:
- Promote research into, and exchange of, knowledge about the clinical entity of sexual dysfunction throughout Europe
- Establish and support the highest standards of ethics in clinical practice, education and research
- Promote co-operation and improve interaction between European researchers and clinicians
- Provide education to clinicians who have limited or no experience in the field, as well as continuing education to those already involved in the management of sexual dysfunction.

The Primary Care Erectile Dysfunction Society (PCEDS) was formed in July 2004 to develop ED services in Primary Care, with the goal of helping men and their partners who suffer from the effects of ED to benefit from existing therapies and future developments.
Its aim is also to establish a scientific society to benefit the public by encouraging the highest standards of practice, education and research in the field of ED.

The Sexual Advice Association
The Sexual Advice Association (previously known as the Sexual Dysfunction Association) provides an invaluable source of information for patients and doctors, wishing to know more about the problem of ED.
The association was established to raise awareness of the incidence of ED and its causes amongst both the public and the medical profession. It educates sufferers and their partners on the wide range of treatments available, puts them in touch with specialist practitioners and provides direct support and advice.
