Assessing the patient

Once the subject of ED has been raised by either the GP or the patient, simple initial evaluation should include:

  • Clear assessment of the exact nature of the sexual problem to ensure ED can be differentiated from other sexual problems such as premature ejaculation, lack of libido, etc.
  • A detailed medical and sexual history
  • Limited examinations, the results of which may dictate where further investigation may be needed

A detailed medical and sexual history is crucial as it will help to establish a number of important points:

  • Define the problem experienced and help establish its origin
  • Provide an understanding of the patient’s perceptions, concerns and expectations about the situation
  • Indicate where more tests are needed
  • Assess fitness for resuming sexual activity
