Understanding ED
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a medical condition, also referred to as impotence. It is defined as the inability to attain and/or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual performance18.
Normally, when a man gets aroused, blood flows into his penis to harden it. But if insufficient blood goes into the penis - or not enough blood stays there - then a man will have a very soft erection, one that is not maintained, or no erection at all.
Ok so it’s not easy to talk about. But if you have erectile dysfunction, you’re definitely not alone. In fact, over two million men in the UK suffer from ED42 .
Actually, it has been estimated that at least 1 in every 10 men experience erection difficulties42.
Often people assume ‘it’s all in the mind’. But estimates suggest that in about 75 percent of cases there is an underlying physical medical condition – like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or a neurological disease42.
So don’t resign yourself to erectile dysfunction, or think there’s nothing your GP can do. Doing nothing could just make it worse. Instead, deciding to take action and talking to your doctor will enable you to find out what is causing your ED, and discover a treatment that suits you.
